We took the girls hiking at Bottomless Lakes State Park in Roswell today.

The weather was warmer this afternoon than it’s been all spring — it was nearly 80 by the time we reached the park — so I made sure to take plenty of water along for the girls.

My favorite way to carry extra water for the dogs is in an old Country Time lemonade mix container. I use the mix to make my own Gatorade substitute (just stir a scoop into a half-gallon of ice water and add a pinch of Himalayan salt to replenish electrolytes*), and when I run out of the powdered mix, the empty containers make handy water storage, as the lids — which are big enough to double as dog bowls — screw on tightly to prevent spills. Each container holds about three cups, and our pack will go through about one container per mile on a moderately warm day like today.

If you’re planning to take your dog hiking this spring, make sure you bring a bowl and enough water to keep yourself and your dog hydrated on the trail.

* Drink all the homemade Gatorade you want, but don’t share it with your dog. The sugar and salt can be harmful, and there’s no need for a dog to consume sports drinks anyway; they’re designed to replenish electrolytes lost through sweat, which obviously isn’t an issue for dogs.
