My winter 2023 obedience class just wrapped up Saturday morning. This was the most dedicated group I’ve ever seen. Everybody did the homework. Nobody quit halfway through the class. All of the dogs had mastered all the commands by the fifth week of class, so I decide to do something new with this last class: I gave a final exam in the form of a graduation party, complete with “barkcuterie” platters full of treats the dogs and their humans could enjoy together.

There was just one catch: The dogs were not allowed to sample the treats unless they were polite. That meant no jumping, no pawing, no barking, and no trying to snatch treats off the tables. They had to watch quietly while their owners ate. Then, if they were very good, their owners offered them nice tidbits to enjoy. (The dogs were especially fond of the peanut-butter-and-bacon-chip cookies, bone-broth gummi bears, and chicken-broth mocktails served from red party cups and garnished with small Slim Jims.)

It was a fun morning, and everybody aced the test.

Below is a video I shared on Instagram. If you’d like to get in on the fun next time around, click here to sign up for my spring class, which starts March 11.
